Complete these checks before starting the configuration

How to remove known Wi-Fi networks

  1. Tap the Wi-Fi signal icon
  2. Select “Network settings”
  3. In Wi-Fi select “Manage known networks”
  4. If the “polimi-protected” and/or “eduroam” networks are present, select them and remove them.

Make sure you have your Polimi credentials (person code and password) in order. You can check the status of your password or set a new one using the authentication widget available in the Online Services.

To enable wired network access, the card must be inserted and installed before starting the configuration.

Manually connecting to a wireless network

Using the Windows search function, search for and open “Control Panel”:

  1. Select “Network and Internet” or, if not present, “Network and Sharing Center”.
  2. Select “Set up new network connection”.
  3. Select “Manually connect to a wireless network” and click Next.
  4. Fill in the fields as follows:
    • Network name: eduroam (or polimi-protected)
    • Security type WPA2-Enterprise
    • Encryption type: AES
  5. Click “Add”.

You will be offered the “Change connection settings” option, select it.

Change connection settings: security

In “Change connection settings”:

  1. Open the tab “Security”
  2. complete the fields as follows:
    • Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    • Encryption type: AES
    • Choose a network authentication method:
      • select: “Microsoft: EAP-TTLS”
      • click on Settings

Smart card or other certificate properties: settings

complete the fields as follows:

  • Check “Allow identity privacy”
  • write “anonymous@polimi.it” in the text box below.

In the “Validate server certificate” box:

  • “Connect to these servers”: wifi.polimi.it
  • “Trusted Root Certification Tasks”: AAA Certificate Services

In the “Client Authentication” box:

  • check: “select a non-EAP method for authentication”
  • select: “Password authentication protocol (PAP)”

Click OK.

Click “Advanced settings” and:

  • check “Specify authentication mode”
  • click OK to complete.

You have completed the configuration of your first Wi-Fi network

  • Repeat from step 1/7 to configure the second Wi-Fi network as well.
  • Proceed to configure wired access.
  • Upon first access to the wi-fi network you will be asked to enter your username and password, use:
    • personcode@polimi.it (eg. 12345678@polimi.it)
    • the password for the person code

Control panel

Search for “Services” with the PC function

In Services:

  1. look for the item “Wired AutoConfig” and select it with a double click
  2. Start it and set it to autostart then click OK.

Open the Control panel:

  1. select “Network and Internet” or “Network and Sharing Center”.
  2. in the menu on the left select the item “Change card settings”.

The PC’s network cards are shown:

  1. Right click on “Ethernet”
  2. select “Properties”
  3. select “Authentication”.

Properties: authentication

complete the fields as follows:

  • Check “enable IEEE 802.1X authentication”
  • “Choose a network authentication method”: Select “Microsoft EAP-TTLS”
  • Check: “Remember credentials”
  • Check: “Fallback to unauthorized network access”

Click on “Settings” (next to “Microsoft EAP-TTLS”).

Smart card or other certificate properties: settings

Complete the fields as follows:

  • Check “Allow identity privacy”
  • write “anonymous@polimi.it” in the text box below.

  • “Connect to these servers”: wifi.polimi.it
  • “Trusted Root Certification Tasks”: AAA Certificate Services
  • Check: “Do not prompt the user if the server cannot be authorized”

In the “Client Authentication” box:

  • check: “select a non-EAP method for authentication”
  • select: “Password authentication protocol (PAP)”

Click OK.

Click “Additional settings” and:

  • check “Specify authentication mode”
  • click OK to complete.

You have finished configuring wired network access.

  • The password linked to the Person Code expires periodically and must be updated.
    Upon expiration, the connection will stop working until you enter your credentials again.

    You can check the status of your password by connecting to the Online Services and consulting the authentication widget.
